Fall 2012 Make-up Trends: Jewel-Toned Smokey Eyes Reinterpreted

Primul trend, care a fost si cel mai cerut in articolul despre trend-uri, este noul smokey eyes in care folosim culori si texturi ce amintesc de bijuterii.

We’ve already viewed the main make-up trends for this upcoming fall season and, as expected, it’s not too wearable. As these make-up looks are created for the runway, the final effect is dramatic and very artistic. But how about if we really one of these and we’d like to add it to our normal, day to day make-up? This is what I’ve been trying to do these past few days, show you “wearable” versions of these trends. I hope you like it and feel inspired to try them on :)

The first trend I’ve approached, which has been the most requested by the readers in the trends’ article, is the new smokey eyes where we use colours and textures that remind us of jewels.

Machiajul ochilor, pas cu pas/ Step by step eye make-up:

1. se aplica un fard maro mat in pliu pentru a trasa o linia de demarcatie ce ne indica pana unde putem merge cu culorile ce vor urma / apply a matte brown eyeshadow in the crease to create a borderline which will indicate as high as we can take the colours to come - M.A.C. Embark.

2. cu un creion kohl negru cat mai moale, se accentueaza linia genelor / using a black kohl pencil, the softest one you have, focus on the lashline – Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Pencil – Zero.

3. se realizeaza baza machiajului cu un fard cremos negru ce va intensifica toate culorile ce vor fi aplicate ulterior / your eyeshadow base will be a creamy black eyeshadow that will make the colors pop – M.A.C. Metal-X Cream Shadow – Gold Carbon.

4. se aplica un eyeshadow albastru marin usor sidefat / apply a cobalt blue eyeshadow – Urban Decay The Black Palette – Sabbath.

5. in centrul pleoapei superioare, se aplica un pigment mov sau verde, cum preferati / use a purple or green loose pigment in the middle of your eyelids – M.A.C. Pigment – Grape.

Eu am aplicat si putin pigment mov sub ochi.

Finish off your eye make-up with black mascara, black kohl liner on the waterline and a touch of highlight underneath your arches. I would recommend you use the same matte brown eyeshadow on the lower eyelid as well. I also applied a touch of purple pigment.

Fall 2012 Make-Up Trends

1. Smokey eyes in nuante intense

3. Eye-liner grafic

Cu totul reinventat, tusul negru devine “non-retro” adica in loc de clasicul machiaj tip cat-eye sau pin-up, avem linii drepte sau chiar forme geometrice pe pleoapele superioare sau inferioare. In loc sa fie aplicat la baza genelor, eyeliner-ul a fost mutat pe pleoapa mobila sau chiar in pliul ochiului.

4.Dark romance – ruj in nuante inchise

Polished & Refined Make-up Look for the Week-End

Whether you have planned a family Sunday brunch or a girls’ Saturday night out, polished and refined make-up, with no vibrant colours, will suit any activity. For a touch of glamour, I’ve made this a cat-eye look, adding black gel liner which has been so popular this year. Classic & elegant.

Interview with Fudge Trainer Peter Dawson-Brooks about haircare, hairstyling and the latest trends in haircuts and colouring

Recently, I had the pleasure of talking to one of the greatest hairstylists here in Romania, a man with avast experience and a great talent, who has worked on numerous international fashion shows and on movie sets. He was so kind as to share his expertise with the readers of this blog so I hope you will enjoy this as much as I did and learn all the smart things he has to say about our hair.

With over 25 years of experience, Peter Dawson Brooks is now Art Director at GETT’S and Fudge Trainer and these are the questions I asked him and also his answers.

I would like to thank GETT’S PR team for making this possible and, of course, Peter for making time in his busy schedule. The interview will be published in Romanian as well, very soon.

Enjoy!

Anca Buzea Make-up: What’s the most important thing we can do to take care of our hair during summertime?

Peter Dawson-Brooks: It’s almost an individual thing, depending on whether the hair’s coloured or not, but the main thing to take into consideration during summer, especially here in Romania where people go to the seaside all season long, is sunshine… the sun will fade the colour, will dry the hair. What you need is good quality products that contain UV sunscreen – what I go for is UV sprays that don’t have holding power so that they won’thold the hair stiff like a fixative spray would do. And also condition the hair at the ends – that’s what I would do. If your hair is wet & with salt water, rinse it, you really must rinse it. Try not to leave hair wet in the sunshine – what you need to do is cover it. Also, when people do hair masks, leave it for as long as it says on the products. If it says “leave in 10 minutes”, then leave in 10 minutes.

  1. Fudge Sea Salt Spray will protect your hair from UV damage while pro-vitamin B strengthens and conditions the hair.

Fudge Ends Smoothing Treatment is rammed with powered proteins to repair and seal dry ends preventing further hair breakage.

Anca Buzea Make-up: What’s the hottest summer hair trend?

Peter Dawson-Brooks: Long hair is still here, it’s still trendy. In Romania, I’ve seen many women looking for long, voluminous hair. Actually, I’ve noticed in clients they’re willing to take more from the length to achieve this voluminous effect. There’s been a real fashion for volume – like the Versace Yellow Diamond campaign, you have the Dallas look. But the longer the hair, the heavier it is. So the volume effect is very hard to get. What people love to see is this look by Raquel Welch with the voluminous, wavy hair. It’s very glamorous, it’s sexy, it’s still in fashion and I still have clients that come in and request this look.

Anca Buzea Make-up: What are the most coveted hair colours for the fall?

Peter Dawson-Brooks: It’s all about mix-colour now. Actually, it’s very subtle because we don’t do the hair root to ends, we leave the roots and we do the lengths of the hair. What we do now is rather than doing just one colour, we take for example a chocolate base and we put some mashes of grey or gold or blonde. You can also take strong colour like green, orange or blue, which is very intense, you bleed the colour together so you’ll have the three colours. Only it will be a mash – you will perhaps have more green-blue-red and you can do it randomly.

Anca Buzea Make-up: Which haircut is most suited for next fall? Is it all about short, structured haircuts or are we going to continue wearing long locks?

Peter Dawson-Brooks: Short, structured hair is coming back in fashion. Also, related to this is the Vidal Sassoon memorial scheduled this fall in London and that is why geometric, short haircuts will be coming back, as a tribute to his work in the 90s – he created the “wash-and-wear” haircuts. (Peter first learned his art and craft from Vidal Sassoon himself). He created the asymmetric haircuts, the geometric styles. What he wanted to achieve was a haircut that was easy to maintain, so that women, who started working in the 60s and no longer had the time to style the hair as they once used to, could wash the hair, blow dry it quickly and go out the door instantly. Everybody was shocked by cutting the hair so short but the effect was wow! But, in the long term, I think we will see much more structure, very strong angles in the hair.

Anca Buzea Make-Up: What is your favourite all-time hair styling product and why?

Peter Dawson-Brooks: Definitely the Skyscraper Hair Spray – I use this on everybody! I love the texture it gives to the hair, it’s medium-hold so it’s doesn’t make the hair stiff, you can still brush your fingers through it but it holds the styling. I love this product, it’s on my work stand every single time!  What I also do with is spray it into my hands and when you’re dealing with the summer frizzies, lay your hair down. It’s good for that, too!

Fudge Skyscraper hairspray is an incredibly versatile medium hold spray. It smells delicious, and delivers long-lasting hold and a shiny finish to any hair type. Skyscraper’s fine mist spray gives your hair a natural look, with medium hold, and brushes or shampoos out easily.

Anca Buzea Make-Up: What would you recommend women to do at home to have a polished look daily?

Peter Dawson-Brooks: After getting a haircut, one that is suited to your hair type and face shape, always use the right shampoo and conditioner. This is what hairstylists should do – when you go to a hair salon, you should get a correct recommendation, like a prescription for you hair and scalp. Because if you go to a pharmacy, and I’m not in the business of destroying anyone’s business, but if you look at all the products on the shelf, do you really know what to choose? The hairstylist should do this: consultation, consultation, consultation! I always call it a prescription – it’s like going to the hair-doctor. Good quality products that are suited to your needs are the quickest and easiest way to take care of your hair. Then always use Fudge Ends for a polished look, it’s the most simple of things to do and it means the world to your hair.

Anca Buzea Make-Up: Conditioner or hair mask?

Peter Dawson-Brooks: Hair mask is better but for women with thin hair, conditioner will be best-suited as masks will weigh it down. If you have normal to think hair, hair masks will work better.

Anca Buzea Make-Up: How often should we cut our hair? What length is recommended to be cut off to keep hair looking healthy?

Peter Dawson-Brooks: In order to remain healthy and avoid split-ends, hair should be cut every 6-8 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows. But never exceed 8 weeks as the split goes up the hairline and that can take years to get rid of and grow back. And also check with your hairdresser how often you need to cut it. If one is trying to grow one’s hair, a haircut is recommended every 6-7 weeks, taking only the very ends, the dry part, thus keeping the hair looking healthy and shiny. The scissors are very important as well – if you’re a hairdresser, keep them in top shape, keep them sharpened and always renew your tools when needed. Otherwise, they crush the hair and create more damage.

Anca Buzea Make-up: Please recommend a product for extra shine (a personal favorite, I adore shine sprays).

Peter Dawson-Brooks: One of my favourite Fudge products and one you got to have is the Head Shine Spray. You spray this into your hair before walking out the door and it will ensure your hair a gorgeous gloss all day. You can also spray it when the hair is wet, comb it through and the dry it. A quick tip, brush through your hair after application to help control fly-aways too!

Fudge Head Shine Spray – The light reflecting properties and two-part silicone system in this super dry aerosol delivers the ultimate in shine to your style.

Anca Buzea Make-Up: Should we style our hair and then do our make-up or the other way around? What is your recommendation?

Peter Dawson-Brooks: Always wash, brush and pin the hair up, then do your make-up and then style your hair. I’ve learned this the hard way, on a movie set where the make-up artist placed a headband on the main actress’ hair after it’s been styled and then did the make-up. The actress was due on set and there was no time for touch-ups. So always wash, brush and pin the hair, off to the make-up artist and then back for hair styling.

As a general recommendation, Peter says “keep the glamour, adapt it to your age range, but don’t loose the glamour. Look at Joan Collins, in her eighties with her Manolo Blahnik high heels all day. A friend of mine said to me recently “Even when I’m 90, I will still wear high heels, I promise!”

The day of the interview, Peter did my hair in a Raquel Welch 70s style which I absolutely loved and suited perfectly my face and features.

After having my hair done by Peter, at GETT’S Radisson Blu in Bucharest.
